My husband and I are retired and would like to visit Maine. Old Orchard Beach was recommended to us; we usually prefer to travel just outside the peak periods (better rates, smaller crowds, etc.). Would spring or fall be a better time to visit? Given that we%26#39;re traveling outside of peak season, we%26#39;d like to keep our lodging at %26gt;$100/night (we%26#39;d like to stay on/within an easy walk to the beach; other than that our only ';requirements'; for lodging is that it%26#39;s clean and neat). Can anyone recommend a place to stay? Thanks for your help!
Best time of year to visit OOBTo avoid the largest crowds you would want to visit between Labor Day and Memorial Day - but any time is great in Old Orchard! If you are interested in visiting other areas such as Portland,Freeport, Kittery, etc - Old Orchard makes a great ';home base';. You can start and end your days with a walk on the beach. For a community calendar of what%26#39;s happening log on to www.shopoob.com. We are holding a street fair type festival on May 3, which will be before the peak season.
Best time of year to visit OOBI drove thru there yesterday. I love the beach in the winter! Be sure to drive down to Ocean Park, it%26#39;s a cool old summer community with some great architecture.
September is a great month for the beach. Kids are back in school, so the crowds have dropped appreciably. May and early June are also good, but can be rainy and colder.
OOB has a wide range of accommodations from very modern high-rise condos to very old family strip motels. You usually get what you pay for so beware of prices that sound too good to be true. They probably are!
Another warning: there are some motels in Southern Maine which have names which suggest they are on the beach when in fact they are not. So, just because a motel is named ';Ne%26#39;r Beach'; or something like that, don%26#39;t assume it%26#39;s on the beach. Still do your research and pay particular attention to pictures on web sites and ratings in AAA tour books. If someone tells you they are ';across the street from the beach'; don%26#39;t assume that means you will see the beach from your room, because that giant condo across the street might block your view. .

Thanks. We always check the reviews here on TripAdvisor before booking rooms in areas where we%26#39;ve never traveled before. ;-)
Thanks, everyone, for the tips/advice.
My family and I go up every year usually the second week ok july. The weather is beautiful.Last year we went up july 9-13.It was great. This year were going july 8-12.If you dont mind crowds you%26#39;ll want to go then.We stayed at richards by the sea.It was only 2 blocks from the beach on the east side of grand ave. Also on beach side made for a very short walk to beach ,pier, restaurants.Very reasonable just over $100. Cant wait to go.Look forward to it every year now.
