My hubby and I are planning a trip to Maine this fall. We%26#39;d like some input/advice on where to stay; we%26#39;ve gotten such excellent advice before from the TA forums, so here we are for more. ;-) We%26#39;re looking for your recommendations on where along the Maine coast we should stay (and any recommendations for lodging in that area).
We prefer to travel just past the peak season; we%26#39;re looking at making this trip some time between mid-September to mid-October; we%26#39;re retired so we can be flexible with our dates. We are beach-lovers, so that is a priority; we do not have to stay *on* the beach as long as we have an easy/convenient walk to the beach. We aren%26#39;t interested in water sports/swimming; we just enjoy walking along the beach. We prefer a little more isolation -- i.e., we aren%26#39;t big fans of the busy, carnival-ish, touristy kinds of destinations. By the same token, we don%26#39;t want to be too isolated; we like to be conveniently located (i.e., a short drive) to restaurants, shops, etc.
We%26#39;re always on the lookout for ';budget'; lodging; while we want something clean and nice, we would rather pay less for lodging and spend more time at our destinations than to pay more and have to cut our trip a little short -- we don%26#39;t spend THAT much time in our room, so we certainly don%26#39;t need anything plush or luxurious. We don%26#39;t intend to do any cooking, so a simple, clean room is all we need.
Forgive me for the lengthy post -- I just wanted to try to give you all an idea of what we%26#39;re looking for ... so you all can point us in the right direction. Thanks so much for your help!
Help with Trip to Maine
My favorite places along the Maine coast are Freeport and Southwest Harbor on Mt. Desert Island. Freeport is a busy tourist town with a lot of shopping and is the home of L.L. Bean. It is worth staying in Freeport for a day or so. There are hiking trails along Casco Bay and a lot of great restaurants. If you want an inexpensive, out-of-the-way place in Freeport, stay in the Maine Idyll - it is about 1.5 miles north of downtown Freeport on Rt. 1. It is rustic, but it is fun.
On Mt. Desert Island, the most famous, and largest town, is Bar Harbor. It has become very touristy and very busy. Its great to visit, but I would not stay in Bar Harbor itself. I find Southwest Harbor to be the nicest place to stay on the island. There are plenty of cabins and B%26amp;B%26#39;s in SW Harbor. You are only a few minutes away from several entrances to Acadia National Park and if you want to drive over to Bar Harbor, you are about 20 minutes away. When I was in SW Harbor back in July 2008, I stayed in Hutchins Cottages. They are tucked back in the woods, but only one minute off of Main Street. You can do a Google search for the website for the cottages or drop me a message and I%26#39;ll give you the contact info.
There is really only one sand beach on the island. It is called ';Sand Beach'; and is in Acadia National Park. My favorite beach on the island is Little Hunter%26#39;s Beach. It is made up of millions of smooth rocks. It sits between two rock outcropping and is absolutely gorgeous. I could sit there for hours and just watch the waves wash over the rocks. It is located off the park central road and is accessed by a narrow stairway off the left side of the road.
Enjoy Maine! I have been vacationing there regularly for 30 years and have never grown tired of it!
Help with Trip to MaineOld Orchard Beach is a great place to stay off-season. You can start and end each day with a walk on the beach (almost 7 miles of it)and do day trips to other areas if you wish. Most hotels consider Labor Day the end of the season, so the rates will drop after that and you can get a waterfront room for a very reasonable price.
