Honeymoon in October

We booked a room at Captain Lord Mansion for four days in October...we are so excited it sounds like a beautiful place. We want to go hiking...maybe fishing and enjoy some good meals. Any suggetions on any or all? We may take a drive on day too...which direction would be the best to head? We will be flying into Portland our first day and then drive to Kennebunkport. Would love some suggestions:-) Thanks, Dawn and Rob

Honeymoon in October

The White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport would be good for a very, very special occasion meal.

Most of the area around Kennebunkport is relatively flat; not the mountains you would find in Camden or Acadia. If you don%26#39;t want to travel far, check out these hikes. http://www.trails.com/activity.asp?area=10428

If you don%26#39;t mind getting into the car and driving a couple of hours for a hike, you should drive up into the Western Mountains of Maine, where you%26#39;ll also find mountains and very pretty foliage. The Bethel area has lots of hiking, the pretties covered bridge i the state and Grafton Notch State Park. See www.trails.com/city-trails.asp…

While in Kennebunkport, be sure to drive out to the little village of Cape Porpoise. It%26#39;s a classic lobstering village. Very pretty and there are several places to eat out there. You can stroll thru the town or just sit on the dock and take in the beauty.

Have a great trip! Bring warm clothes, we could have overnight frost in October.

Honeymoon in October

Great thanks so much!!

During that part of October the leaves should be at peak colors somewhere in Maine and/or New Hampshire. It%26#39;s probably a couple of days early for peak in Kennebunkport / Southern Maine, but not for the Western Mountains of Maine.

If you can, monitor the peak foliage reports, see www.maine.gov/doc/foliage/report/index.shtml and …silvertech.net/index-flash.html and take one day and drive to the where the colors are most brilliant. If Bethel, Maine is at peak, that would be a gorgeous trip with the Artists%26#39; Covered Bridge and Grafton Notch State Park. See http://byways.org/explore/byways/11515/

Another favorite foliage trip is the Kancamagus Scenic Byway in New Hampshire, see http://byways.org/explore/byways/2458/

I%26#39;m a really big fan of the Mount Washington Auto Road, see http://www.mtwashingtonautoroad.com/ but you won%26#39;t get a view unless it%26#39;s a very clear day; don%26#39;t even bother if it%26#39;s a cloudy day.

Wow you are awesome thanks!!! I looked at the Mt drive I can not wait and hope for good weather:-) We are off to France this monday so now I can relax b/c the honeymoon is planned:-) Thanks again!! Dawn

It will be VERY cold at the top of Mount Washington in October. You should see ice and snow. And the wind will blow, possibly quite fiercely. So, for that day pack winter clothing, including gloves and hats.

Bon Voyage!

You might want to try a couples massage at The Cottage Breeze Day Spa since it is your honeymoon!

The Captain Lord Mansion is supposed to be beautiful!

I just sent a bunch of recommendations to another post for someone that is coming here in May. You may want to check that post...

Have fun and enjoy! October is the best month in KPT!

Hi Dawn - We also booked Capt Lord Mansion!! We are going for 3 days the last week of June for our 20th wedding anniversary. We are staying in the Regulator Room. Which one did you book? Doesn%26#39;t it look awesome?! Can%26#39;t wait to go there. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

Hi!! I think we booked Excelsior...but now I cant remeber lol...they all look great to me:-) I would love to hear about your trip when you get back!! Send me a message or I will give you my email. Have a great time and Happy aniversery:-)

Hi dawn,

You%26#39;ll love the Captain Lord Inn. Very nice, well located and maintained. I stayed there years ago and wasn%26#39;t disappointed.

Regarding hiking and fishing. You didn%26#39;t mention which part of October and that%26#39;s important since many places and activities close down after Columbus Day Weekend or soon after.

Anyway, if you%26#39;re into moderate hiking and not mountain climbing, you might want to think of the Boothbay Region Land Trust trails. They are located in said town which is about a 1 1/2 hour drive north of Kennebunkport. Most of the trails are easy to moderate and have gorgeous views of ocean, coves, sandy beaches, forests, etc. Check out www.brlt.org for more details. One recommendation if you decide to go this route is to hike the Porter Preserve. This trail has a Kodak moment around every corner and could take you either just a couple of hours or an entire day. Pack a picnic lunch.

Another organization to look into in the Boothbay region is the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. They offer a wonderful visitor%26#39;s center w/cafe, as well as gardens and lovely trails that often lead to pretty water/river views, sculpture%26#39;s and/or meditation ponds/areas.

Last but not least in the Boothbay area is the lovely Ocean Pt. This is a place where you can park your car and walk along the Shore Rd which borders rocky coast, open ocean, islands, 4 lighthouses, gardens and quaint summer cottages. Sunsets are beautiful here!

None of the above places mentioned are for the super serious, rugged hiker/climber. Almost anyone could hike them though some are tougher than others and require that you be in good shape physically as well as cardiovascularly.

Boothbay Harbor also offers LOTS of fishing trips, tours and expeditions. But again, it depends on the time of year. If you%26#39;re talking early October than some of the tours will still be running. Mid to late October and many close up for the season. There are also one or two tour boats that do run into late October ie Captain Fish and the Balmy Days. Check them out online if you%26#39;re interested.

Oops, almost forgot, closer to Kennebunkport is Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal, which would only be about an hour%26#39;s drive or less away. There is good raptor watching here and some nice trails. Try googling for more info if interested.

Good luck with your trip!

P.S. Don%26#39;t forget to check out the Marginal Way in Ogunquit and the Cliff Walk in York. Both are beautiful, relatively easy hikes high above the ocean w/spectacular views on either side. Ogunquit is only about a 20 minute drive from Kennebunkport and York is to the south about a half hour, maybe 40 minutes away. Again, google both locations to help you determine if they%26#39;re for you.

Oops, I goofed. The Boothbay Region Land Trust%26#39;s site is bbrlt.org. I accidently left out one of the %26#39;b%26#39;s and the site I previously listed is in New Orleans! Sorry about that...
