Bar Harbor in February

We have a chance to visit Maine in February. Are there any hotels that are open in Bar Harbor in the winter? I%26#39;m not having much luck. Are there any places that will rent cross country skis? I know Loop Road is closed but is it possible to park and then walk to the ocean? Thanks

Atlantic Oaks is about the only hotel open. There are a few B%26amp;Bs open: Aysgarth Station, Canterbury Cottage.

Cadillac Mountain Sports rents cross country skis. Some of the carriage roads in the Park are groomed for skiing.

A short section of the Park Loop Road is open to auto traffic. All of the Park is open if you are willing to hike into it. Parking areas on the outskirts of the Park are plowed and open. There is also a short section of the Loop Road open at Jordan Pond.

Eagle Lake is well-frozen right now with a few fishing shacks operating. You could ski or hike around the lake or on the lake. The ocean is accessible at many places -- it is an island, after all! Come on up!

The Ocean Drive section of the Loop Road from the Schooner Head Overlook to Otter Creek Road (just short of Otter Cliffs) is open. You access it by taking Schooner Head Road from the south side of Bar Harbor---the turnoff from Rte 3 (Maine St.) is at the dairy bar and is signed.

The other access that bonniemaev mentioned is Jordan Pond Road out of Seal Harbor. It connects to the Loop Road at Stanley Brook Rd; the road is open from there to Jordan Pond.

I don%26#39;t keep up with all of the carriage roads that are groomed for xc skiing. Generally, the one on the west side of Eagle Lake is groomed, as is the Upper Hadlock Pond loop. The parking lots at these places are kept open. Very likely, the folks at Cadillac Mountain Sports or at Park headquarters can fill you in on which other stretches are groomed.

Try barharborchamber.org, the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, and acadiachamber.com for Southwest Harbor/Tremont lodging. Both will be able to help. Good luck and Happy Planning - snow is plentiful this year.

You can check the website sleepbarharbor.com for a complete listing of B%26amp;B%26#39;s that are open. In addition to the ones mentioned above, Saltair Inn, Coach Stop Inn and the Graycote Inn are also open.

Also, if you go the the website for Acadia National Park and click on Winter Activities, there is a map with highlighted cross county ski routes and the status of the trails are updated on a daily basis.

I believe the Black Friar is open.
