One Day Only_What Not To Miss

My husband and I will be in Bar Harbour for only 1 day while crusing. We will have about 6-8 hours but not sure what we should do and what we should skip. We are interested in a whale watching tour, but not sure if we will be there at the right time? We are definately wanting to visit Acadia National Park for picture taking of the fall foliage. Looking for sites to see, a good restaurant or two and anything else that might be a must-do while there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Since you are only here for a few hours and don%26#39;t have a car, I would recommend taking a tour offered by the cruise or taking one offered by a local company, such as the Ollie%26#39;s Trolley. This will give you a great overview of the park and take you to some great places where you can take some pictures. If you%26#39;re feeling more adventurous you could take the free Island Explorer bus from the Village Green to the Acadia National Park Visitor%26#39;s Center and then transfer to the free shuttle that goes around the Park Loop Road. Using the shuttle will allow you to get off and on the bus at your own pace. You can also stop and enjoy some of the quieter areas of the park or maybe even do a short hike.

Whale watching is a four hour trip so it will eat up most of your time in Bar Harbor. If your heart isn%26#39;t set on seeing whales, there are a couple of shorter boat cruises that will still give you time in the park. A couple that I would recommend are the Acadia Nature Cruise or LuLu%26#39;s Lobster Boat. Both take you up along the rocky coast out to Egg Rock Lighthouse where you will see seals, maybe some porpoise, and most likely some eagles.

Thank you, we have started looking at some of the cruise tours that are offered and will more than likely do one or two so we have a better chance of seeing more and not missing out on something by trying to research and do it on our own.

My husband and I really would like to do the whale watching tour, and if the other tours work out so that the timing is right, we still should have plenty of time to do a couple and still have time to ourselves to grab a bite to eat or walk around. Would you suggest the whale watching tour, is this a good time of year to see them, and do people typically have alot of luck or is it a flip of the coin. The reason I ask, someone mentioned to me that we should not do the whale watching tour in Halifax because most often, people see their backs and don%26#39;t get a good look at them because the tour is set in a non-opportune area. Is this applicable in Bar Harbor?

You never mentioned when you were going to be here. If you%26#39;re here in September, I don%26#39;t really think that is a good time to see whales, although I am no expert on when the best whale watching months are. I think it%26#39;s luck. Some people report great trips, others go and don%26#39;t see anything. You are not guaranteed to see a whale on every trip (even though the company will give you a voucher to go again if you don%26#39;t see any on your trip).

I second the vote on the Acadia Nature tour. It was very good, informative and lots of nature to see. We did see some harbor porpoises, harbor seals, and a bald eagle. Truly amazing!

I love the park loop too. Lots to do and see. You could spend all day there. Lots of tourists! September might not be as bad though.

Enjoy your day in BH!

Is there a chance for you to spot whales from your cruise ship?
