Hi Guys!
After perusing lots of forum posts and researching lodging choices, we%26#39;ve narrowed our scope. Right now, the Bar Harbor Inn, the Harborside Inn, and the SaltAir seem to be our finalists. Now we%26#39;re looking for the one or two clues to solidify our decision. We do want to be in the village of Bar Harbor. My wife and I love good breakfasts, comfortable accomodations (not fancy necessarily), fun interractions with local folk and fellow touristas, sightseeing, shopping, dining, walking, biking, etc. We%26#39;ve no interest in ';fancy'; pursuits, save an indulgent trip to one of the local spas. Sunrises, sunsets, ice cream parlors, rustic restaurants with good food, etc...Sounds like a plan. Would love your input on the lodging. Thanks CoolRay

We%26#39;ve only stayed at the BHI but we loved it, especially our stay in June. We%26#39;ve stayed in the Main Inn in a harbor view room with a deck which was lovely. We%26#39;ve also stayed in the Newport Building which was also very comfortable. It%26#39;s right in town so you%26#39;re close to everything. It%26#39;s on the shore path so it seems a little quieter than maybe the Harborside would be. Afternoon tea and cookies in the lobby brings out all sorts of people. There are couches and a computer in the lobby so you can choose to be social if you want to. They have a very good continental breakfast situated in this wonderful room overlooking the water. In June they have tables outside on the deck and the lawn. It%26#39;s the best part of the day. They also have an on-site spa. There%26#39;s something very old-resorty about the place that we really like. Plus the staff is very accomodating and helpful.

The first two are large, impersonal, albeit luxurious and waterfront, hotels. You wouldn%26#39;t have much interaction with the local folk. Saltair, on the other hand, is a Bed and Breakfast, with a mere four rooms. There you would eat breakfast around a large table with your fellow tourists and chat with the young couple who own this waterfront inn. You would also have the benefit of their extensive local knowledge as to hiking, scenic drives, vistas, and the best ice cream places.
My own personal choice is always Castlemaine Inn on Holland Ave. on the more more sedate end of Cottage street, yet there are very good places to eat at that end!!!. You are within walking distance to the village. All the times I have stayed there I have meet some very interesting folks from all over. Having breakfast on the large wrap-around veranda is a pleasure, there are also inside areas to enjoy your breakfast which was always very good to get you started for the days activities. Dan, the owner, is always full of info to get you going on your days plans.
We love the Holland Inn, very clean, cozy with top notch breakfasts.
