Where to stay in Maine

Go easy on me!! this is my first trip that I have planned for my husband and me in a long time. I am looking for a central place in Maine where 2 day trips can start from. We had been told boothbay would be good but posts seem to think it is not easy to get in and out of. I am looking for fall color, lighthouses and the lobster village scenes. So any pointers on Bed and Breakfasts or quaint inns in a central town. On the third day we will be leaving for Vermont so this also would be good to keep in mind so as not to have to double back too much in driving. Wheeeeeeeeew that is allot I know but this is our first time. Heeeeeeelp.

Where to stay in Maine

Hi semitegal,

It would help if you mentioned when you%26#39;re coming, where you%26#39;re flying in/out of and exactly how many days you%26#39;ll have in Maine. Those details could help with making suggestions about locations to stay and/or visit.

Post again and let us know what the scoop is :).

Where to stay in Maine

Good Morning Cozyharbor, Told you I was new. Sorry for the lack of info. We will be flying into Boston from San Jose Ca. but will depart our friends home via rental car on Oct. 20 and will need lodging on the night of the 20th. Next day we are off to Rockland and I have chosen the Berry Manor for that evening. We are looking forward to fall color and some amazing fishing villages as well as light houses. Also do any of you know of any worthwhile boat tours? Iam very into photography. Thanks for such a welcoming post. Hope this helps. Don%26#39;t hesitate to ask me any questions you think could help.

If you%26#39;re looking for lighthouses, don%26#39;t forget to ask your hosts in Rockland for directions to the breakwater. It%26#39;s a mile-long walk on huge granite boulders out to the lighthouse guarding the entrance to Rockland Harbor. Can be a great walk on a sunny, crisp fall day.

Just a short drive up the coast is the coastal community of Camden. No famous lighthouses here, but some great photo opportunities.

Enjoy your visit.

Thanks for this info which is very valuable. I will take that walk sounds great. semitegal

To keep an eye on the foliage status, here%26#39;s the state%26#39;s website:

http://www.maine.gov/doc/foliage/

I%26#39;m thinking that foliage will be nearing an end by then, but should still be OK on the coast. (I%26#39;m in southern Maine and the color is starting to pop out.)

Boothbay Harbor is on a peninsula, so you must go down and back. That%26#39;s probably where you got the ';not easy to get in and out of.'; The next peninsula east of Boothbay has the towns of Bristol and South Bristol and is home to Pemaquid Point%26#39;s lighthouse - a great spot for picture-taking. You could stay in the twin villages of Damariscotta and Newcastle, just off Route One, then do a day trip down the peninsula. You would definitely see the lobster village scenes you%26#39;re hoping for.

Portland, although not a ';quaint'; village, offers the nearby Portland Headlight as well as ferry trips to the islands of Casco Bay.

While in Rockland, you could check out the nearby airport for an opportunity to film the harbor from above. We recently flew to Matinicus Island, and I immediately made the connection to the paintings by Maine artist Eric Hopkins. It%26#39;s a great scene on a clear day, and not horribly expensive.

Hi CB 48, Thanks for the great tips. I too hope that the color holds out for us. I am a bit bummed at the thoughts that it will be over. We made this trip based on last year which is really all we had to go on. Again, thanks so much. Semitegal

If you do decide to go down the peninsula to Pemaquid, also watch for signs to New Harbor. It%26#39;s a very small, but very picturesque little spot.

Last time I was there, admittedly a couple of years ago, there were a couple of lobster co-operatives that didn%26#39;t object if you actually walked out onto their docks -- great opportunities for pics of the harbor, lobster boats, lobster being off-loaded, etc. But I%26#39;d watch for signs to make sure the docks are still open to the public -- signs probably won%26#39;t say public welcome, but may indicate no public access... Still worth checking out and not that long a side trip if you%26#39;re going to Pemaquid anyway.

As far as the foliage is concerned -- it varies from year to year, sometimes as much as several weeks, because it depends on weather conditions that also vary year to year.

I%26#39;d keep an eye on the website mentioned above, which can also be accessed through MaineFoliage.com Same website, just a shorter address. As of this morning (Friday), extreme northern Maine was reporting 50-75% color, but the coastal area, including Boothbay, Pemaquid and the southern coast was reporting only 10% color change. Foliage season is unique, but even if you miss the peak color, coastal harbors and lighthouses can still offer some very interesting photo possibilities.

maineron the go, Very awesome post with good ideas and tips. This fioliage thing is freaking me out. We will be there Oct 20th in Boothbay and I am scared we may miss it. Since this is a trip I have been waiting for all my life I sure hope we see some. Again, keep helping us you are a jewel. Also looking to get onto a lobster boat and actually be involved in the process of pulling up lobsters and weighing and measuring them. It is hooked up with the Rocktide Inn and resturant. Sounds great! Any inside info on this or any others like this?

';Consider ';insuring'; your vacation by choosing destinations that offer interesting experiences beyond leaf peeping. The cog railroad ride to Mount Washington%26#39;s summit is memorable. Enjoy schooners under sail, harbor tours, and island ';ferries'; with their unique Maine twists. Look for wildlife while enjoying the various preserves and hiking trails. Observe a Moose (use a guide), hear a Loon, and spy the classic ';V'; of Canadian geese heading South. If it is raining ...'; This snippet from my article, Leaf Peeping in Maine at boothbayharborcottage.com/UndergroundConsume…

Myonecent, Another amazing bit of info. How grateful I am to you for your post. Do you yourself have a favorite harbor tour???? We are considering a lobster boat trip which lets you experience the pulling up of traps, measuring the lobster for market. Sounds like a great adventure. Looking forward to hearing from you or anyone else. Semitegal
