what should I do in Lubec for two days - early September?

We are arriving from Portland late afternoon on Sunday. We have Sunday afternoon and all day Monday. I%26#39;m wondering if we should try to get to Eastport? Any info would be helpful.

I would think that going across the bridge to Campobello Island would be more fun that driving to Eastport. You can tour Roosevelt%26#39;s summer home and also see the lighthouse. Campobello Island is in Canada but the bridge from Lubec is very short with dramatic tides running swiftly underneath it.

How about late afternoon over at Quoddy Head State Park and watch the sunset around the lighthouse. There are also numerous hikes in the park, too, and great places to watch crashing waves.

Monday, I would also do the sunrise at Quoddy Head, but then would go over to Campobello and hit the Roosevelt summer cottage, Herring Cove Beach, and East Quoddy Head light. Across the street from Roosevelt%26#39;s summer cottage is a road... Follow it to the end (although you make a right out there somewhere) and it will take you down to a point where you can look over at the USA and West Quoddy Head light. There is also a hiking trail (looking at to sea from the parking lot the trail starts to the left) and it leads to the Sunsweep Sculpture. It is an easy trail to hike, too.

Look up the tide charts for Lubec, at low tide (only low tide) you can walk over to the East Quoddy light which is really cool.

I have photos in my Lubec and Campobello albums on the website under my name...

We just got back from the Lubec area this morning. We had gone to Cutler for the puffin trip (which is a story in itself) and stayed over a day to just roam around the area. We went over the bridge into Canada, visited Campobello, which was fun, and ended up at East Quoddy Head. Basically you follow the road past Campobello to a stop sign, turn right and follow that road to the end of the island. There is a lighthouse there, but yesterday we spent the afternoon watching seals, dolphins and whales from the point. The whales were a ways off, but you could see them (and the whale watching boats following them) easily. A word of caution, however, we ran into a couple who said that they had been to that point the previous two days, and saw nothing, so it is hit and miss on the whales. The view is worth the trip anyway, in our opinion.

You definitely want to hit the East Quoddy Head LIght on Campobello at low tide. Then maybe again at high tide too for the contrast if you are still on the island for a great contrast.

';Campobello Island is in Canada';

We shall be touring the Maine coast in early September and would like to visit Campobello Island.

Will we have to go through border control to get there and is it an easy process. As we are touring we will have our passports with us, but would we need a visa or anything. UK has visa waiver for trips to US, but I don%26#39;t know about Canada.

I have heard of long lines on Canadian borders in other parts of the US.

We just returned from Lubec a week ago. There was virtually - no line at the border crossing from Lubec into New Brunswick. Lubec is a VERY small town - no traffic lights - only 1 booth manned by 2 border control employees. Here is the info. I copied from the site re: Campobello Island:

www.fdr.net:

Crossing the Border:When entering Canada, it is necessary to cross through Canadian Customs. On returning to the United States, you must pass through U.S. Customs. In 2002, border waits at the Lubec/Campobello crossing were a maximum of about fifteen minutes, much shorter than in Calais/St. Stephen. Bring a) your passport or (b) original or certified copy of your birth certificate and c) photo identification. Naturalized citizens without passports should bring their naturalization certificates. In addition, single parents, grandparents, or guardians traveling with children may need proof of custody or notarized letters from the other parent authorizing travel. Travelers without such documentation may experience delays at the port of entry.

Just returned to Oregon from two weeks in Calais, Maine, where we have been a number of times. If you will be in Lubec, certainly the other replies are correct: your first and second priorities should be Campobello and Quoddy Head (who can resist the urge to get your feet wet and climb out over the rocks to reach the really easternmost, easternmost point?). If you wind up with time to spare, a trip over to Eastport (40+ miles one way) could be worth your time, though I have to say that there is not a whole lot going on in either Lubec or Eastport - looks to me like high gas prices are having a serious impact on touristing in those parts. The display in Eastport regarding the failed Roosevelt attempt to wring electic power from tidal forces is interesting and if your timing is right, the reversing falls and whirlpool features can be mildly entertaining. Also be sure and stop at Raye%26#39;s Mustard Mill on the way into town. And, if you do make the trip to Eastport, you really have to stop in Perry and eat at The New Friendly Restaurant. Both the locals and the Chowhounds New England site rate it as possibly the best Lobster Rolls in the state. We ate there about 8 times during our two weeks in Calais and I can vouch for the lobster, the haddock, and the fish chowder. My wife vouches for all of the shrimp dishes and the roast beef.

I definitely agree with all of the preceeding suggestions to make East Quoddy Head and West Quoddy Lighthouses a priority and to explore the Lubec and Campobello Island areas. As of June, 2009, you will need a passport to cross the border. The border crossing in Lubec is not at all intimidating. At the height of summer you might encounter a short line of 3 - 4 cars. That is a rare occurence, though, and will not be the case in September. Lubec has a great web site you should take a look at to get more ideas about things to do, www.visitlubecmaine.com.
