Fryeburg Fair Traffic?

I%26#39;ve read that the traffic from the fair can be pretty bad - backed up for miles. Which roads get backed up? We%26#39;ll be driving through the area on the last day of the fair, and are hoping to miss the congestion. We%26#39;re hoping to be through the area before noon - will that help? Thanks!

Fryeburg Fair Traffic?

Where are you coming from and where do you wish to go? Unless you are going through the Fryeburg area very early that morning, you will encounter traffic. Since the first day will undoubtedly be rainy, the last day will be busy if the weather is good. (If you%26#39;ve never been, I highly recommend it - something for everyone.) If you post your travel info, maybe we can suggest an alternate route.

Fryeburg Fair Traffic?

Thanks so much - we ended up changing our plans a bit to see the White Mountains earlier in the week in order to avoid the fair traffic and the likely large Saturday foliage crowds! We%26#39;d love to stop by the fair, we%26#39;ll just have to see how our time is looking as we pass through. Thanks again!

We also will be passing back through Fryeburg that Sunday AM and I wasn%26#39;t thinking traffic would be that bad early, I guess we will see. We will be in the area for three days prior to that and I have studied up on using some of the ';backroads'; to navigate around the North Conway traffic and maybe a back way to the fair, hopefully I dont get lost.

We have never been to the Fryeburg fair but are very excited given all that we have heard about it, I plan to gain about 10 pounds that weekend, lol.

CountyMounty: It is actually pretty easy to negotiate around the nuttiness in North Conway. There is an access road near the WalMart that runs behind the main street. You can completely bypass the outlets and the downtown, or you can turn in various spots and get closer to what you actually want to see. However, there is a Catholic church near the further end that ties up traffic on Saturdays to the point that there is a traffic officer controlling access. Just watch your timing for that one.

As for gaining weight at the fair, that%26#39;s a definite possibility:-) Our favorites include the Sunflower pizza stand (everyone else%26#39;s favorite, too, judging by the lines), the ice cream stand run by a local church - near the dairy barn (slow but friendly service), and the fried dough. We try to buy at stands run by the local non-profits as opposed to the commercial vendors. There%26#39;s also lots of great shopping and unique crafts vendors.

I can%26#39;t wait.

Question about traffic and back roads. Looking at the maps it looks like it might be better for us to go to and from the fair from the north. Am I right to think that a lot less traffic will be coming to the fair from the north, down RT5. We are actually staying in Barlett so its looks like we could take the ';hurricane moutain road'; over to North Fryeburg, cut over to route 5 and then down to the fair that way. Distance wise it is about 4 miles more than going via 302 but I%26#39;m was guessing it would avoid a lot of the traffic. Also we may use the west side road to completely bypass North Conway.

Great guess! From personal experience I can tell you that the Rt 5 backups southbound are lighter than the ones you%26#39;ll encounter using Rt 302...

As you get to the fair itself, start looking for parking opportunities on the opposite side of the road. You can park on the fairgrounds itself, but because of the way their parking lots are laid out, there%26#39;s no gurarantee you%26#39;ll be any closer to the actual activities than if you park across the road and the on-the-grounds parking can get quite dusty depending on where you end up.

Lots of ';locals'; actually offer paid parking on their front lawns for rates fairly similar to what they charge on the grounds. We%26#39;ve had great luck the past few years in a lot almost directly across from the first entrance gate to the fair you%26#39;ll come to headed south on Rt 5. As an aside, when you leave the fair you%26#39;ll hit a lot less traffic headed north on Rt 5 than you will going south on Rt 5 to 302.

Have to be honest -- have never tried the routing you suggest from the Conway area, but do know that coming down Rt 5 from the Center Lovell area is better than coming up Rt 5 from Rt 302....have even encountered lengthy back-ups on 302 itself some years when we needed to go that way for non-fair reasons.

As far as food at the fair, everyone has their favorites... but if you want something a little non-greasy, filling and perhaps just a little bit nutritious, look for a stand near the Crafts and Vendors barns (south end of the fairgrounds near the children%26#39;s area) that%26#39;s selling turkey. They have something called ';Thanksgiving on a Roll'; that I guarantee will fill you up for a while....

Hope you can get to the Fair...it%26#39;s a great experience!!

The traffic is bad unless you get there early and totally agree with the fried dough etc...try not to miss it, it%26#39;s one of my favorites in the area including NH fairs that I%26#39;ve been too.
