We will be arriving in Maine by way of New Hampshire I have three days to schedule in Maine before we want to be in Glouscer.
We want to see Moose, Whales and Arcadia N.P. We are in our 50%26#39;s but traveling with my mom in her 70%26#39;s who does not hike. Help me decide where to go and what to see.
Maine in September
The most likely areas to see moose would be Greenville up around Moosehead Lake and over in the Rangeley area. It is possible, I suppose, to spot a whale off the coast but they never guarantee it. It is ACADIA National Park and September is a great time for that, as July and August is very crowded. There are free bus shuttles to most parts of the Park. I would suggest you head out of Bar Harbor on one of those and have lunch at the lovely Jordan Pond House - or have their famous Popovers out on the lawn. There are many excursion boats for sightseeing off the Harbor right in Bar Harbor.
Maine in September
You would have a lot of traveling to see moose and whales in the same trip. If you go to Bar Harbor, which is the gateway to Acadia National Park, there are whale watching companies right in town. The Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company is one option. They offer a number of trips. Expect those trips to be about 3 hours long.
If you went to Greenville as another person suggested, the drive is about 2-3 hours depending on traffic. The best time to see moose is early in the morning or at dusk. Last time I was up in the Jackman Maine area (a little farther away than Greenville) I was up around 5am and saw about 3-4 moose walking along the roads.
We were thinking about staying Bangor and going North to Greenville for a day trip then back to Bangor and thene do Barharbor the next day and on the Bath. Does that sound do able
We were in jackman and in bigham did not see any moose in the bigham area but did in jackman almost every other day.Went quad riding on the trails deep into the woods but saw more from the roads early in the morning going to breakfast. That is when we saw them on the roads. They spook easy like deer so look way ahead then coast we got some gret pictures this way.The other times they took off fast and missed the shots with the camera.
We also went to greenville to moosehead lake for the boat cruise.Did not see any moose the road was busy (late morning) but plenty of moose territory there with marsh%26#39;s streams ponds.Probably best bet would be real early with no traffic. If your going on the boat tour check the days their open we went blind and it was the only day they were closed. They might have off season times in september.
We went to Bingham and Greenville in May and we did see Moose in both locations. Make sure to stop at a visitor center or Chamber of Commerce when you arrive in town because they can give you a map of the places where you might see a moose. We were told that you see more moose out in the open in the Spring because they are trying to escape the black flies in the woods and seeking out the muddy areas along the side of the main and logging roads. Maybe you can call the visitor%26#39;s center and find out if this is a good time of year for moose spotting.
I spoke to someone that went whale watching yesterday and she saw four humpback whales pretty close to the boat so I know that the whales are still around.
