Hi There,
I%26#39;m planning a 10-day trip to NYP, New England, and Philadelphia (Oct 18-28). Here is my schedule.
- New England (Oct 18-21): arrive La Guardia airport by 11 am on Oct 18, rent a car, drive up to catch some fall foliage along the way to Acadia NP. I%26#39;ll skip Boston as I%26#39;ve been there before and will focus mainly on scenic driving for fall foliage and coastal scenery. My plan is to go as far as possible from NYC and spend a night somewhere between Portsmouth and Portland.
Oct 19: Drive further north via coastal routes (through Camden) to Bar Harbor about noon (is it possible to go inland routes and see some foliage colors this late-October?). In the afternoon, explore Acadia NP and Bar Harbor.
Oct 20: Get back to do foliage routes along the way to New Hampshire. This may include Mt. Washington, and White Mt. Sleep in the northern part of MA.
Oct 21: Spend a day in parts of MA, RI, and CT. Get back to NYC and return the car in the evening.
Oct 22-25: NYC
Oct 26-28: visit a friend in Philly.
Could you guys please comment if my plan on Oct 18-21 is doable and reasonable?
Is it worth doing a drive to Acadia NP this time of year?
In addition, I found that most campgrounds are closed after Oct 15, could you please suggest some alternatives?
Any comments or suggestions on ';things to do'; or ';routes to take'; each day would also be really appreciated.
Thanks!

Is it worth it doing a drive to Acadia at this time of year? A resounding ';yes'; from a fellow New Yorker. Check out http://www.ouracadia.com for 16 tips for fall trips, as well as a new blog post about things for couples to do in October on MDI http://ouracadia.wordpress.com. I went to Acadia last year the first week of October. The weather was exquisite, perfect for hiking and biking. You just have to pre-plan dining out more carefully than during the summer. Enjoy!

Thanks Gwendolyn53. That%26#39;s really help.
I think your itinerary through Maine is ';doable'; but involves a lot of driving, and probably limits time for doing other things along the way.
My suggestion would be to drop out the October 21 day in massachussetts or RI and plan to spend that day in the white mountains of NH.
THis would give you more time to explore Acadia which is pretty impressive any time of year..then head over to the white mountains..one suggestion would be to go to Gorham NH..then drive south on rt 16..you could drive to the summit of Mt Washington as the access rd is off of rt16..you can hike around some of the trails near the summmit if you wish..in any case the route down to North Conway is spectacular...you could then drive the Kancamagus highway from Conway to Li9ncoln NH..and maybe up past cannon mmountain area....also very spectacular scenery..
if you can advise some of your specific interests i would be happy to make more specific suggestions
either way it should be a good trip for you
Traveler541, thanks for your info. I%26#39;m all into the nature: camping, hiking, and so on, but most members in my group are not. So we%26#39;ll do a lot of foliage/coastal scenic drivings (with short walking). However, it would be great if you please suggest a few excellent places for 1-2-hour hiking/activities with foliage/coastal scenery.
Moreover, please suggest a plan for Oct 21 in case we drop out MA %26amp; RI, but still need to do ';Litchfield'; in CT. I%26#39;ve heard a lot about this area and just want to see it for my eyes.
Thank you very much.
