Must sees in Maine

We hope to visit Maine next September. What are the must sees? we are aware of some places such as Acadia National Park. Any off the beaten path places that we should know about? Also. are there any whaling boats that time of year? Thanks

Must sees in Maine

Acadia

Portland%26#39;s ';Old Port'; (Great Resturants)

Popham Beach

Stonington

Quoddy Head State Park

Rockland Breakwater

White Barn Inn (Kennebunkport)

Moosehead Lake

Sabbathday lake (Shaker Village)

Must sees in Maine

We love the mid-coast area: Boothbay, Damariscotta/Newcastle, Camden/Rockport/Rockland.

Also, for a more woodsy, mountain, off the beaten path area, head to Eustis/Stratton and Rangeley. Great moose-watching!

The White Barn Inn requires a deep pocketbook.

Thank you CB48 and FES2. I have a lot of things to check out now! Josie

In addition to the places listed above:

Monhegan Island - It will take up most of one day but if you have the time and the weather is clear, visit this beautiful island. Pack a lunch and take the boat out of Port Clyde and make sure you visit the Port Clyde area as well (and my personal fav, Marshall Point Lighthouse).

Baxter State Park. - Its a bit out of the way of most of the usual places tourists hit but the park is worthy of a visit. Its not as car-friendly as Acadia. To truly enjoy the park you need to put in a little effort by either hiking or driving on dirt roads (dont be too afraid, you can drive a sedan in the park) but the scenery is amazing and Katahdin is a site to behold.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks Acadiafan,

Maine sounds like such a beautiful state!!!!

We visited for the first time last summer, went to Portland, Bar Harbor, Camden (my favorite) and Ogunquit. Here%26#39;s the run down on our trip, I put lots of info in there. tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i12853-Honeymoo…

Thanks rose4jc2 for the rundown on your honeymoon trip. There is so much to learn and we are just in the planning stages. But I am coming across lots of ideas and places to eat, thanks to people like you. I think I will check out your other posts on Maine too. Thanks again for the time you put into writing about your trip!

rose4jc2: I really enjoyed your trip report! You%26#39;ve given me new places to try and I live here:)

go to popham beach, this is where the movie ';message in a bottle'; was filmed (even though in the book it is north carolina), and reid state park, it has a beautiful lookout rock. they are not far apart, you could see them both in one day if you had to. I have been going to maine since i was a kid, i have a lot of family there. i agree with the other posts, monhegan, bar harbor, baxter, and moosehead are great sites to see. also, maybe go to lubec, me and be the first person in the u.s. to see the sun rise as this is the eastern most point in the u.s. enjoy your trip, maine is so beautiful and diverse.

Thank you keysgirl7 for your post. I just read the message now.
