Well we just returned from another magical week on Mount Desert Island. Rented a ';camp'; on Long Pond. Spent every morning (think 6:00 AM) kayaking, mid-AM fishing and the rest of our time hiking and walking throughout the park. The weather was amazing. Cool at nite (used the wood stove) and perfect for hiking during the day. The colors of the trees were so beautiful. Went to Schoodic for a day. We%26#39;d forgotten how beautiful it is out there. Worth the drive. Saw eagles every day at various places on the island. Discovered a wonderful trail (Beech Cliffs) which we never knew about. .3 mile from the Beech Mountain parking lot takes you to the top of Beech Cliffs overlooking Echo Lake, Somes Sound and Southwest Harbor. Don%26#39;t know how we%26#39;ve missed that for 20+ years. Decided our new, favorite place to eat is Cafe 2 in Southwest Harbor. The spiced pumpkin/squash soup is fantastic! Got to BH a few times; once during the day when 2 cruise ships were in town. Way too many people. Came back at nite and just enjoyed walking around, pizza and beer at Geddy%26#39;s and ice cream at Ben and Bill%26#39;s Chocolate Emporium. We%26#39;ve only been home for a day and already we%26#39;re having ';Maine Withdrawal';. I would definately recommend visiting this time of year. We%26#39;ll be back in June!
Bar Harbor Trip ReportHey, I really appreciate the reading your report. We have always enjoyed our Fall trips to Acadia. This year we went in June instead and loved that time frame equally. We too will be returning in June. But man do I miss being there in the Fall.
And your new favorite restaurant Cafe 2, is a place that we enjoy for lunch and breakfast under its alias - Eat-a-Pita.
See you in June! =;^)
Bar Harbor Trip ReportI%26#39;m glad that you had decent weather for all that. Beech Cliffs is great. Also very nice is the Valley Trail, which also begins at the parking lot. It takes you through very lush growths of ferns; then you can ascent Beech Mountain to the fire tower and complete the loop back to the parking lot.
The Valley Trail is also where the Forests of Lilliput ranger walk is held.
We%26#39;re in BH right now and we are having a heated discussion about whether its ';spectacular'; or ';magnificent';.
Things are moving (coloring) fast. On Friday I did the carriage road loop (6 miles) over the Seven Bridges and past Gilmore Meadow and Aunt Betty Pond---in that area, I estimated that about 50% of the trees were in color.
On the other hand, the stretch from the village out Eagle Lake Road is gorgeous.
