Day trips and other ideas around Kennebunkport

I ';won'; a trip at an auction that is taking us to Kennebunkport for a week. I%26#39;m excited to see Maine, but am clueless as to what we should do while there (except for sleeping in and eating good food!). Our lodging is paid for as part of the auction package, but I wouldn%26#39;t mind paying for an overnight trip somewhere. I%26#39;m thinking of south to Boston or north somewhere. We%26#39;ll be there next week (Oct 8-14).

We%26#39;ll have a rental car, but if we go to Boston should we take the train? I%26#39;ve heard traffic there is awful. I%26#39;d like to find a day-tour of Boston if we go there.

thanks for any suggestions you might have to offer!

If you do decide to take the train to Boston, you could get on in Wells. There is a station there with ample parking.

You are going to hit prime foliage here in southern Maine. The colors are beautiful this year!

IMHO there is plenty to do in Maine alone, without doing the daytrip to Boston. Ogunquit, Portland, the Freeport outlets and maybe an overnight further north into the, again MHO, best parts of the state: Camden/Rocklan, Acadia, Bar Harbor...

...that%26#39;s RocklanD....

The weather is sounding good for next week! I agree that Maine offers a lot, but a day trip to Boston, especially using the train, is a fun outing, especially if someone deosn%26#39;t get to New England very often.

Thanks for the ideas!

We really would like to see the Bar Harbor/Acadia area, but it seems like a long time to be in the car during our vacation. Is there a train or any other transport that might be fun? Does it seem crazy to go that far for an overnight?

One other question --

If we do decide to drive up to Bar Harbor should we take the faster I-295 route or the Hwy-1 route that seems to go along the coastline? On mapquest it says it only takes half an hour longer - it is particularly scenic?

Thanks!
