Any suggestions on places to go?

Hi! I will flying into New York for a conference in Boston on 26 May next year. My friends and I have 4 days to spare before and after the conference. Was thinking of travelling to Maine. Could anyone suggest an itinerary (including the best way to move around) for sighseeing? Appreciate it!

Any suggestions on places to go?

Will you have four days on each end of the conference?

Any suggestions on places to go?

Yes, we do have 4 days on each end. Thought of the first 4 days to be at Maine area and perhaps the last 4 days in New York area.

What type of interests or activities do you have or would like to do on this trip..

sightseeing, hiking, kayaking, sailing, lighthouses, etc...

Some of the general areas in Maine that are recommended would be

1) Portland old port area restaurants, shops, pubs, interesting architecture and buildings..taste of 1800%26#39;s shipping town with cobbled streets.

2) Freeport..shopping and LL Bean

3) Wiscasset..antiques, old houses, couple of rnice restaurants, Red%26#39;s Eats, view

4) Boothbay Harbor...the perfect maine seacost harbor town.,.. shopping, many hotels and B%26amp;B%26#39;s, restaurants, lobsters, kayaking, bhoat trips, fishing trips etc..highly recommended

5) Pemaquid lighthouse..THe famous lighthouse and rocky shore

6) Rockland, Rockport..seaside towns

7) Camden, must see..beautiful harbor, shops restaurants, B%26amp;B%26#39;s sailing, kayaking hiking and rock climbing in camden hills state park..spectacular views..must visit

8) Barh HAbror...acadia Park..spectacular..

these are just some of the popular places to visit in Maine.most off of route 1..many other places worth visiting too..

if you advise your specific interests can be more specific

The only feasible way of moving around and seeing a lot in Maine is by automobile.

In terms of planning your time, the driving time from Boston to Portland is approximately three hours; from Boston to Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park is approximately five hours by interstate highway, six hours or a bit more if you drive the coastal route.

Portland would be a good first stop---the Old Port area has shops and good restaurants.

If you want to maximize the amount of Maine that you can see, from Portland I would travel the coastal route (highways 1 and 3) through Camden and on up to Bar Harbor.

You may find a number of ideas on the Maine forum---there is a new entry on a New England Itinerary, part of which deals with travel and things to see in Maine.

Thanks for the good suggestions. Our aim is to enjoy the scenery, food and do to some kayaking which you listed really well.

I would like to ask how long would the journey be from New York to Portland. We may stay a night at New York to get over the jetlag first and then rent a car to drive up to Maine. Thanks!
