We are going to be in Bar Harbor for 4 nights in early July and would like to have a cabin or similar so that we can self cater. We would be grateful for any suggestions. Our plan is to spend the time in Acadia walking so favorite walks and swimming spots would also be welcome, Many thanks.

I don%26#39;t have any specific recommendations but I can offer some web sites that may help you.
http://www.acadiamagic.com
is one of the basic resources for this area. It includes links to cabin and cottage rentals.
http://www.cyberrentals.com
specializes in rental houses and cottages. Others on this forum have recommended this site.
http://www.vrbo.com
is a site devoted to people who rent their own houses and cottages.
As you go further into your planning, you may find that most places wish to rent by the week; it may be difficult to find many that will rent for a four-day period.

The Quimby House Inn has a separate building that has kitchen effienices where you could make your meals,I don%26#39;t know how large the units are, but the Inn will be listed in the Bar Harbor website. The Inn is located on Cottage St. Also one of the staff at Castlemaine Inn has a condo in BH that she rents in the summer months while she is working at the Castlemaine. They may be able to help you with some info. Also check out Downeast.com the magazine for people who love Maine. Their rental ads start picking up by the March issue. Also check out MDIslander.com the Acadia newspaper online.
Good luck.
The Quality Inn, right in Bar Harbor, also has a wing with efficiency apartments. ';Self-catering'; is very much a British term. You want to look for things that say ';kitchenette';.
Although homes usually rent by the week, the very small cottages that are popular around Acadia will rent for less than a week. One very nice place is Bar Harbor Cottages and Suites. It%26#39;s in a quiet area, convenient both to the town of Bar Harbor and to the National Park. In addition to a kitchen, each cottage has a screened porch and an outside picnic table. They are close enough to the ocean to get the sea breezes. The provide a nice little welcome basket with a few thigns like coffee and milk to get you started. http://www.barharborcottages.com/
One more to add. The Snell House is very close to town, right off Atlantic Ave. I believe you can still rent for less than one week. It%26#39;s not a stand alone place as it is a large house that has been renovated into several suites. You can park your car for the whole time and walk to the Village Green Explorer Bus stop when you want to head into Acadia NP.

Sorry I havent thanked you all sooner for your contributions. We have been concentrating on getting the rest of our holiday planned and booked. We are now only having 3 nights in Bar Harbor and have booked a motel as we will be having a whole week in the White Mountains in a cabin. It will give us a taster of Maine before we drive back down the coast to Boston to fly home.
Thanks again Chris and Ken
Depending on what kind of ';catering'; you are planning, the LOCAL MARKETS identified in the site below may be helpful to you, especially in finding seafood or organic produce:
