February vacation week

I am in the process of planning a family trip and hoping my Maine TA friends can help me out.

Are there any special planned activities for the February vacation week in Portland or in the Portland Area?

Also, on a recent post, someone suggested walking the Portland trails. Can you please tell me which trail you would recommend? Are all the trails accessible during the winter months?

Any tips on saving money?? discounted museum passes etc.

Here%26#39;s a great site to check out Portland and what it has to offer:

Ironically, they%26#39;re running a new winter festival next week, not the week of school vacation. Look under seasonal events.

Thanks CB48.

What restaurants would you recommend? We are looking for family friendly? It does not have to be in downtown Portland anywhere south of Boothbay Harbor and north of Kittery.

Hi Remay,

Definitely take the family to the Lobster Shack at the end of Two Lights Road in Cape Elizabeth. It sits high on a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean, you can dine in or out and there%26#39;s something for everyone. Very family friendly.

A short drive from there, is Portland Head Light with more stunning views out to sea, a large grassy area that is great for flying kites and picnicing, as well as a neat little museum.

As for trails. I don%26#39;t know the Portland area that well, but just a 15 to 20 minute drive north is Wolf%26#39;s Neck State Park in Freeport. Here is the link to their website which offers lots of info: tripadvisor.com/PostReply-g40827-i176-k25254… They offer trails and great views.

Hopefully the Portland Expert or others who know the area better, will chime in with further recommendations,

Good luck :).

Cozyharbor,

Thank you.The Lobster Shack looks great but I think it might be closed for the season. When I went to the website it said it closed on October 26, 2008. Do you know when it reopens? Can you also repost the link on Wolf%26#39;s Neck State Park in Freeport I could not open it. Thanks Again.

I must have been typing when you reposted the link. Thank you

Can I go to Wolf%26#39;s Neck State Park in February? The web site says they charge a fee from April to October.

Hi Remay-

It looks like the Portland Museum of Art has some special events planned in conjunction with their current exhibit of rock %26#39;n roll pics:

(look under events)

It also looks like there are special plans at the children%26#39;s museum next door:

This might answer your questions about what is open in the area of parks and trails:

maine.gov/doc/…hiketrails

There are several places to cross-country ski or go tubing. I%26#39;m pretty sure there was a previous thread about that not too long ago.

As to family-friendly dining, of course there are all the chains out near the Maine Mall. Right in town there is Margarita%26#39;s with two locations: Brown Street and St. John Street. The Portland Diner, down on Marginal Way is becoming popular, due to reasonable pricing and tasty food. If you%26#39;re heading up toward Freeport, we also like the Muddy Rudder on Route One (Yarmouth, I think). If you%26#39;re going that way, your kids might enjoy the big globe (Eartha) inside the DeLorme map store.

Hope these ideas help!

Thanks CB48 and Cozyharbor,

The Portland Museum of Art sounds like a fantastic idea. My 7 year old and 14 year old are taking guitar lessons, the Family Rock%26amp;Roll concert will be perfect for them. We are members of The Childrens Museum of New Hampshire and have a reciprocal use at most of the other children%26#39;s museums around the world so we will definitely be going to the Portland Children%26#39;s Museum. I hope I can make it to Yarmouth to go The Muddy Rudder. Thanks for all your help I will post a trip report after our trip.
