Hi, we%26#39;ll be traveling to Wells over the Christmas holiday (Dec 19-26) and are looking for things to do in the area besides drive down to Boston. Also, are there a lot of lighthouses around that we could do a driving tour of? Finally, what are the roads like and how long would it typically take to get to Boston from Wells in the winter? Thanks for your help!
Wells in Winter
It%26#39;s a straight shot down 95 to Route One to get to Boston, normally 1 1/2 drive unless you hit commuter traffic or a snowstorm. Do you ski at all? You could spend a day at Sunday River, it%26#39;s about 2 hours from Wells.
Wells in Winter
Wells is beautiful in the winter. Where are you staying? I recommend Lafayette- it%26#39;s right on the beach and one of the few hotels open year round.
You can go to the Kittery outlets which are on your way back to Boston. They%26#39;re about 20 minutes from Wells. Just follow route 1 south. Other than that, it%26#39;s a nice quiet time to go. Unsure about the lighthouses...many places close for the winter, so you will really get to enjoy the beauty of the area in peace.
I would say an hour from Boston on the weekend going 70 without the crappy weather. It usually doesn%26#39;t get to bad out until after Christmas, but it IS new england, you never know!
It%26#39;s 80 miles to Boston, at least 7 of which are on the 2-lane rte 1 and not interstate 95. I%26#39;ve never done it in less than an hour and a half in the summer (with no traffic and going 70).
One great place to explore in Wells is Laudholm Farm, beautiful in any season, but I see that they may be closed over the holidays.

I love the Maine coast during the winter - a great time for a quiet walk on the beach! Ogunquit and Kennebunkport are both nearby, and stores are open for the holidays. You could easily spend a day just wandering around the little shops and exploring the quaint villages. Portland is a great city about 40 minutes north of Wells. The Old Port area is lovely, and I%26#39;m sure the city will be decorated for the season. Lots of great restaurants in Portland as well! You%26#39;ll enjoy the area!
