Hi, We are visiting this area in the first week of July. Are the flies gone by then?!?! If they are still there, are they everywhere? We want to do a boat scenic tour on the lake - would that be ruined? Moose photo tour (hopefully car/truck would keep us out of them), and of course hiking in the park.
Any suggestions?
Baxter State Park - black fly in July?
Black flies never truly go away until it gets too cold for them, but they are worse in May and June. There are repellents that will keep them at bay. They also ';like'; some people more than others. I can%26#39;t imagine that they would ruin a boat tour. You would see them more in the woods and near running water.

Black files tend to stay around all summer...and fall until it gets too cold for them.... Are definitely worse in May and June....as are the mosquitos and no-see-ums. But don%26#39;t expect a bug-free visit to Baxter anytime between May and at least late September.
Boat tour on the lake is apt to be a good relief from them -- especially if there%26#39;s even a little breeze blowing.
Car/truck moose photo tour will help protect you from most of them....except for those who get in whenever you open a door or window.
Best bet -- get a good repellent in Millinocket before heading into the Park....different brands appear to work better for different people, so, depending on the size of your party, you might want to try a couple of different kinds. For some folks, Avon%26#39;s Skin-So-Soft seems to work better than most of the commercial repellents. Might be a good place to start. And has already been pointed out....some people seem to be more succeptible than others...definitely avoid perfumes, after-shaves and that kind of thing -- just attracts them.
Don%26#39;t let the fear of potential bugs spoil a great trip. The Baxter Park area is truly unique. Enjoy!
Thanks for the info~ We can handle this ';amount'; of bugs:)
