Spent this past Thanksgiving with my family in the Ogunquit area so wanted to pass on some suggestions. Certainly the summer will have a much different feel as many places were closed for the season but from what we saw of the area and found open we really enjoyed it despite the colder weather.
We stayed at the Cliff House which is located in York. This could be a good option if you are looking for somewhere a little removed but still accessible to all the attractions, restuarants, beaches and so on. It is located right on a cliff side (hence the name) so if you are one for ocean views it is a nice option. The hotel standard was very good with several diffrent facilities, some of which we really could not take advantage of due to the weather but we enjoyed the spa. I think in the end maybe a bit overpriced because you are paying for the views but again maybe we would have appreciated it more in warmer weather.
We walked the marginal way which was a beautiful cliff side walk in any weather. We accessed this from a charming area with shops and restuarants called Perkins Cove which I am sure is quite lively in the summer. We drove up to Portland for the day and wandered around the downtown there which is well worth a look and an easy drive. If you want to do a bit of shooping you can drive south to the Kittery outlets where we did some Christmas shopping. As for food we found two gems which should not be missed. One was one of the best dining expereinces we ever had in Kennebunkport at a place called the White Barn Inn and the other was a fun spot just off the route one called the Maine Diner.
I think certianly a car is needed so you can enjoy these short day trips with everything no more than a 30 minutes drive of Ogunquit. Again we had a great time but add warm weather, beaches and the ocean and I think you have a excellent choice for a destination.
Ogunquit at Thanksgiving.............
Very good insight. We do a lot of day trips in the area and off season can be very enjoyable minus the crowds.
