Has anyone vacationed in April in Rockland, Maine or anywhere in that area? I have my timeshare reservations starting April 17 , 2009 at the Tradewinds on the Bay. I%26#39;m concerned that we won%26#39;t be able to go whale watching, etc. The snows will probably be melting by then and it will be kinda messy. I%26#39;m sure the town will be very beautiful and will have something to offer. Thanks for responding.
Rockland Maine in April
We have a place in Southern Maine and one April my visit started out with a snowy icy nor easter, and within 2 weeks got to 80 degrees. It can certainly be a mixed bag of weather in April. Also, since Rockland is quite a bit further north than us, I imagine a lot will still be closed then. I bet if you contact the chamber they can tell you a lot more - http://www.therealmaine.com/ .
Rockland Maine in April
Wow, I guess I%26#39;ll just have to take a chance on the weather. I haven%26#39;t seen snow in quiet a few years. I contacted the resort this morning and was told that everything will be open but the whale watching was out. She told me that I have a fireplace in the unit and it faces the ocean. If anything, there won%26#39;t be too many tourists around. Thanks for the info.
Hi
We came over from England this year in April (15-22nd) and stayed in York, Camden and Southwest Harbor. We were also a bit concerned about the weather but had six great days of sunshine (one day was in the 80%26#39;s). The weather did turn towards the end of our trip but we were very lucky and absolutely loved the state of Maine. Hope you have a great time whatever the weather.
My husband and I vacationed in Rockland last April. We had a really nice time. There weren%26#39;t any boats operating, but there were still things to do. There%26#39;s the Farnsworth museum, scenic driving tours to several lighthouses, walking the long breakwater, and fine dining at several restaurants. Your also only six miles from Camden and about an hours drive from Portland.
We are actually staying at Tradewinds on the Bay the weekend before Christmas. We%26#39;re not expecting Rockland to be too exciting, but we%26#39;re planning to spend a day in Portland Christmas shopping.
There%26#39;s also a couple of hikes in the Camden area if you like being outside.
Actually, Rockland is pretty much a year-round town with a revitalized Main Street - shops, the Farnsworth and fun restaurants. As others have said, you%26#39;re near Camden and also about 30-40 minutes north of Damariscotta - another fun town to spend time in, with the Pemaquid peninsula a nice drive from in town.
Others have covered the weather accurately. Whale watching would not be fun that time of year - too rough.
One of my fondest memories is going to Maine (York and Ogunquit) in the ';off season';. It was the end of October - freezing cold at night with warm sunny days. It was lovely. Your accommodations sound grand. Would you mind sharing the name of the hotel/B%26amp;B you have booked?
April in Rockland, or anywhere in Maine for that matter, can be a real mixed bag weather-wise. It%26#39;s the end of our fifth season of the year, which we affectionately call ';mud season'; as the accumulated winter snow melts off and the frost comes out of the ground. It varies from year to year, but you can expect anything from wet Spring snow to warm sun with temperatures in the 70%26#39;s.
Some of the seasonal attractions may be getting ready to open for the season, but most won%26#39;t really get going until May... but not to worry -- plenty of year-round things to do in April. Lots of interesting shopping opportunities on Rockland%26#39;s main street -- some really creative restaurants -- and a nice central location as a base for day-trips.
Even though it%26#39;s not whale-watching, if you really want to get out on the water, check at the north end of the business district for the office for the Maine State Ferry Service. It provides service to several off-shore islands in Penobscot Bay. The shortest ride will be about a half-mile north of Rockland from Lincolnville to Islesboro...takes about 20 minutes each way if memory serves....but not much to do on the island because it%26#39;s mostly private summer homes and year-round residences. For a slightly longer ride, take the Vinalhaven ferry -- their small downtown is walking distance from the island ferry terminal and includes a small working harbor -- could be fun on a warm Spring day.
If it%26#39;s cold or the weather is bad, someone else has already mentioned ';the Farnsworth'; as a great idea. And you%26#39;re less than an hour from Augusta, home of the Maine State Museum -- lots of Maine cultural and natural history at a very reasonable admission price. To make a great day of it, leave Rockland mid-morning, drive just south of Augusta on US 201 to Hallowell (great town for shops, botiques, old books and antiques) and some fantastic places to have lunch (the locals like Slates and the Liberal Cup but there are other good places too), After lunch, visit the State Capital and the State Library and you%26#39;re still back in Rockland by suppertime.
The best part about being here in April is that you%26#39;ll miss the mid-summer tourist traffic, crowds, etc. and the shopkeepers and restaurants will be happier than usual to see you.

Thanks so much for all the information. Yes, I%26#39;m looking forward to seeing the change in seasons. We don%26#39;t see many changes here in Louisiana. I was also thinking of going to Nova Scotia.
It is a time share resort called Tradwinds on the Bay. There may be units to rent other than time share units. This will be my first time visiting Maine and I have gotten good reviews even during that time of year. I was thinking of driving to Nova Scotia also. Of course it will be a lot colder up there but can%26#39;t pass up the opportunity. I always look forward to something different and this trip will be a lot different from the weather we have in Louisiana.
Everyone always says to go to the Farnsworth when in Rockland. There are a couple of other places I would like to throw in the mix and that is the Lighthouse Museum, very nice and lots of info and lenses(huge) on display. Another is in Owl%26#39;s Head, not far from where you will be staying, on route 73 it is The Owl%26#39;s Head Air and Transportation Museum, it%26#39;s worth your time. Drive around the back roads between Rockport and Camden, it%26#39;s a beautiful way to see some great senery and homes. I always drive the loops when I%26#39;m in town. The '; oreo cows'; are always a treat, especially if they have calves with them.
Have a great trip!!!
