I%26#39;m heading up to Baxter in July. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to stay near the park? The only place reviewed is the EconoLodge, which sounds like it is a little shady.
Thanks in advance for your help.

You might find some help at the Chamber site, http://www.katahdinmaine.com
Hotel/Motel wise:
I would avoid the Adobe Inn. The web site looks okay, but it is adjacent to a place with a sign that gives the impressioin that there are exotic dancers.
When I%26#39;ve had to to to Millinocket, I%26#39;ve stayed at the Heritage Inn.
Katahdin Shadows and Gateway Inn are way out of town.
The Keepringe Inn must be new, I%26#39;m not familiar with it.
Your other alternatives are campgrounds or rental houses.
Where to Stay Near Baxter State Park?
If your%26#39; heading to Baxter then you%26#39;re best bet will be sporting camps or campgrounds. Some have cabins and furnished camps rather than solely tenting areas. Big Moose Campground is one. Very convenient. If you can get ahold of a gazateer you%26#39;ll be able to find them on the map by number.
Try 5 Lakes Lodge or Twin Pine Camps.
The Best Value Heritage Inn is, without a doubt the BEST option...I am there right now. Great, quiet property, lots of ammenities...the owner and his wife are on premises, quality people, quality ownership.
Glad I found this site. We%26#39;re heading up to BSP for the first time after years of promises. I have no idea what to expect for lodging. I was set to go with the Econolodge but after reading the reviews here I think I%26#39;ll keep looking. The Best Value Inn looks promising.....thanks.

Hands down the best place to stay in that area woud be 5 Lakes Lodge. You are going to pay a lot more than the EconoLodge but there is no comparison between the two. My husband and I loved the 5 Lakes.

We ended up staying at the Best Value Heritage Inn. It exceeded our expectations. It was clean, comfortable and reasonable. I posted a review saying as much. I would stay there again.
5 Lakes does look very nice but for what we wanted (a one-night stay for a family with 2 small kids) the Best Value Inn worked great.
btw....just looking at the Econolodge gave us the creeps.
If you%26#39;re a hiker, don%26#39;t forget the AT Lodge. Otherwise, there is the Econo-Lodge or the Heritage Inn. Since I live in Millinocket, I haven%26#39;t stayed in either one but I%26#39;ve had family who%26#39;ve stayed in both. I%26#39;ve heard some complaints about the Econo-Lodge but I think it depends on what you%26#39;re looking for. The Katahdin Shadows is very nice; it%26#39;s not in Millinocket, but Medway, a few miles away, toward the Interstate.
Baxter State Park itself rents cabins right in the park. I will admit that the first time we made reservations, I was prepared to ';rough it,'; but that was not at all what we did!
We stayed at Daicey Pond -- and later Kidney Pond -- on a cabin right on the water. There is no electricity or running water, but quite honestly, I barely noticed. Bring lanterns, and be secure in the knowledge that each cabin is assigned its own outhouse, which is clean and smells pretty good.
You can rent canoes for a couple of dollars a day -- literally -- and cook outside at the water%26#39;s edge.
