April travel

My vacation time is in April and we had our hearts on staying at a cottage or a place we could build a fire outside. But when we begin making travel plans most of the places that offer that are not open yet. Does anybody know any April travel tips or any spots where we can stay other than a hotel. We are open to anywhere in Maine and don%26#39;t want to spend more than $150 a night. Thanks in advance.

The reason many places aren%26#39;t yet open in April is because April is still pretty much winter here. There are no leaves on the trees. The frost is going out of the ground. We call it Mud Season. The little clusters of cottages that are popular in the summer are often still without water. They have ';seasonal water'; because they don%26#39;t have basements and the water pipes are not laid deep in the ground to prevent freezing. The water usually gets turned on in mid-April when cleaning begins for a May 1 opening.

Up here in Bar Harbor, things begin to open after May 1st. However, there are restaurants and Bed and Breakfast places that do stay open all winter and would be open in April. In Bar Harbor, you could try Saltair, Aysgarth Station, or Canterbury Cottage. These are all pretty, welcoming Bed and Breakast places with nicely decorated rooms, good breakfasts, and friendly innkeepers. Saltair is right on the water in the village.

While in Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park is open for hiking and biking and photography. Sometimes in April the carriage road system is closed because the gravel surface is too easily damaged as the frost goes out. The shops in town will begin to open. Ice cream and coffee and a souvenir t-shirt can probably be found even in April.
