Hello all - my wife and I are visiting Boston in May, and we will have four days to explore New England after, beginning May 17.
Our tentative plans are: 5/17 - drive to Portand; 5/18 - Portland to Bar Harbor; 5/19 - Bar Harbor to New Hampshire (someplace near White Mtns); 5/20 - drive to Vermont (someplace around Stowe/Burlington); 5/21 - drive to Boston, fly home at night.
Does this sound doable? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Wish we had more time, but this is all we have on this trip.
Visiting in May
I realize you just mean to hit the high points, but being in each place for one day will mean missing most of what you hope to see.
I assume by going to Bar Harbor you wish to explore Acadia National Park. Zipping in for one day will really not give you that experience. I would do either Portland or Bar Harbor for the first two or three days. If you%26#39;re not going for the park, skip Bar Harbor altogether. You can get the coastal experience - out on the water, viewing lighthouses, etc. in Portland.
If you are doing the White Mountains of New Hampshire, there is no need to go to Vermont. Stowe is pretty and a fun village to explore, but you will be adding significant drive time. Again, I would do one or the other.
Visiting in May
I agree with CB about how you%26#39;ll miss a lot by rushing from place to place. If you absolutely want to get a piece of each of the areas you listed, it is doable, but hit North Conway area in New Hampshire instead of VT. Still heart of White Mountains, and some lovely places to stay in the area (see notchlandinn.com for example.) You should know that northern New England can have some quite cold temps in May. And, trees will only be beginning to leaf out. You could limit your trip this time to the coast, where you could spend a couple nights in one place to really be able to explore that area. Good luck with your plans!
Thanks for the responses. I%26#39;ll probably cut out one of our stops, most likely Bar Harbor. There are places we wanted to visit in NH and Vermont (like a Vermont rock quarry and covered bridges), so I think we%26#39;ll add a day either in Vermont or in Portland.
