bike trip for 2009

My father and I are taking a motorcycle trip to Maine this summer (End of August). Neither of us have been there and we%26#39;re looking for a place on the coast to set as our ';Ending Point.'; Hoping there%26#39;s a really good place to see, visit, all you can eat crab/lobster or something worth traveling 3,000 miles for. Any help would be great. Thanks

Take U.S. 1 from anywhere in the southern part of the state (Bath/Brunswick is a good place to access it). Follow it downeast to Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park and several villages, including Bar Harbor. In ANP, bike to the summit for sunrise or sunset (or both). Lobster will not be hard to find.

On the way to MDI, there are interesting spots to explore---Camden, Rockland, Pemaquid Point, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge %26amp; Observatory. Also, beyond MDI there is Schoodic Point, much of which is also part of ANP, and further downeast, Lubec and Campobello.

In planning your explorations, I recommend that you get a copy of the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, published by DeLorme. Your bookstore should be able to order it for you, or you can order it direct:

It is invaluable, especially if you want to explore along the coast, off of the main roads.
