Boston and beyond

Hi there

We are planning to come to Boston in early August with my 17 year old son for 18 days. I feel I have the Boston part of our trip sorted as we plan to spend 3 days there and then pick up a car. My problem is, although its not a problem, there are so many wonderful places to visit that I am spoilt for choice and cant seem to make a decision. Ideally I would like to go as far as Bar Harbor, staying at suggested places along the way, and then travel back taking in recommended places in New Hampshire, Vermont and the Berkshires. If time I would also like to maybe visit newport and Cape Cod before flying home.

Although I have a rough plan I would appreciate help from members in suggesting the route and recommended places to visit along the way.

Thank you very much.

I think it would be useful for members to see your rough plan so that we could make suggestions. The places you have mentioned all sound good, so it just depends on how you wish to divide your time and split up the driving.

That being said, driving in Maine can encompass visiting L L Bean and the related Freeport wholesale stores area. The coastal route up the Maine coast, particularly after Augusta, is quite pretty taking in some nice scenery away from the highway. You might also want to consider visiting most of Acadia National park surrounding Bar Harbor. This can be driven and hiked with great ocean views. Also the Moosehead Lake and Baxter State Park areas are good hiking and wildlife areas to visit as well as prime canoeing spots.

There are many nice places in Vermont, including Waterbury (Ben %26amp; Jerry%26#39;s), Woodstock with a wooden covered bridge and a lovely little park near the water mill, and the Lake Champlain area toward the border of Canada. The White Mountains bordering New Hampshire and Vermont are very beautiful and cooler at that time of the year. There is also a huge wholesale mll in New Hampshire (sorry, can%26#39;t remember the city) where you can spend days.

A lot to think about, and we look forward to your tenative schedule.
