Cozy snowy getaway for one?

I want to plan a trip for Valentine%26#39;s Day. I assume from past experience that my husband will be working so I%26#39;ll be on my own. I promised myself last Valentine%26#39;s Day (%26amp; the one before that, %26amp; the one before...) I would be somewhere special for VDay 2009. Here%26#39;s what I want:

-Snow

-Fireplace

-Cozy comfy bed

-Good simple food that%26#39;s not too expensive

-Maybe learn to cross-country ski (or something else I can show off about when I get home)

I live on the east coast %26amp; wouldn%26#39;t mind flying (although I%26#39;d prefer not to have to spend 7 hours on a plane). I could also take the train or drive (but I prefer not to drive the whole trip). I have my passport %26amp; wouldn%26#39;t mind Canada.

My trip doesn%26#39;t have to be in ME. If you all know of any place in the US or Canada that you would recommend, please do.

I don%26#39;t drink alcohol at all %26amp; I don%26#39;t downhill ski (not really interested in returning home with a cast on a limb). I love to read %26amp; don%26#39;t mind playing Scrabble or board games with other travelers.

Cute little shops (semi-precious jewelry, new-age, second-hand books) nearby would be heavenly.

Gosh that whole thing above makes me sound boring! Thanks for your help though.

I think you%26#39;d like Camden, but you can%26#39;t guarantee snow if you are somewhere on the coast. Yet, if it is snowing, you don%26#39;t want to have to drive too far to/from an airport.

You might have a better shot at snow if you are somewhere inland like Burlington VT --it has direct flights from DC. Be sure to post in the VT and NH forums, too.

You might also like Freeport, Maine. They have cozy Bed and Breakfasts and also a rather nice hotel, The Harraseeket Inn, right in the middle of town. There would be a choice of restaurants. My favorite is Azure Cafe. And, of course, lots of shopping, from L.L. Bean to Cool As A Moose to lots of name outlets, all in a small town, walkable seting. You would be close enough to Portland to go explore that for an afternoon. There is Wolf Neck State Park for a snowy stroll and lots of hiking trails in Portland itself, including a hike around the permimeter of a small island, Mackworth Island.

I was once in Freeport during a March snow storm. It was really lovely walking to dinner from the B%26amp;B through the gently falling snow. And there was, in fact, board games and a fireplace in the one of the two living rooms at the inn, The Kendall Tavern.

I see that you posted in the VT forum, and someone suggested Stowe. That%26#39;s a cute, touristy Vermont town, with lots of shopping, I think you would enjoy it, and I%26#39;m guessing you%26#39;d have a higher chance of seeing snow on the ground. The problem with coastal Maine in the winter is that precipitation often changes to rain. I%26#39;ve actually stayed at the lodge mentioned, it%26#39;s very Alps-like, not New Englandy, tho. I think I;d try to find somewhere with a New England feel.

I travel alone quite a bit [DH is working or off on hunting trips]. I go every year to King%26#39;s Port Inn in Kennebunkport, and love it. They have big wonderful beds, and two of the rooms have gas fireplaces, and whirlpool tubs and the biggest showers ever.

There is a Cross-country ski place near by [sorry I don%26#39;t remember the name]. You are a short walk to beaches, and lovely little shops and great restaurants. A little way down the road you%26#39;ll find Lindholm Farms and all the trails you can stand.

Kennebunkport is just a short drive to outlets in Freeport and Kittery. Also very close to Portland, and several lighthouse.

[by the by I%26#39;ll post some ideas for you in Vermont as well on that forum]

You can also try the Wenworth in Jackson NH. North Conway is a near with plenty to do. Jackson has cross country skiing, sleigh rides, ice skating. I%26#39;m sure there will be plenty of snow. You can also try Nestlenook Farm. Just google either one. Come back and let us know what you have decided.

I would strongly recommend Freeport for all of the reasons mentioned above!!!!!
