Fishing, Cabins, Moose, Canoe/Kayak

I%26#39;m looking to a plan a trip with my brother and father. I%26#39;d like to have an adventure weekend filled with kayaking/canoeing, fishing, moose site seeing, maybe a lobster dinner. It would be great to do a river trip where we could stay at cabins along the way. We want it to be a combination of the great outdoors but with the comforts of home and not a lot of work or requiring our own gear. I%26#39;m not sure if anything like this exists but would appreciate any guidance - many thanks.

Fishing, Cabins, Moose, Canoe/Kayak

I don%26#39;t have any specific recommendations for you but it sounds like you might want to hook up with a Registered Maine Guide. This link is a good place to start http://www.maineguides.org/index.html from that page, click the %26#39;companies%26#39; links and you%26#39;ll get a list of their members with links to their web sites. Many have lodges and camps and all the gear you could need, along with the area expertise to help you get the most out of your weekend.

Maine is a big state so you%26#39;ll want to consider the time it will take you to get to wherever you%26#39;re going to start the weekend. Personally, I love the Rangeley Lakes region and it would have everything you%26#39;re looking for. It%26#39;s about 2.5 hours or so from Portland, in the western mountains of the state.

I would second the Rangeley lakes region. My father and husband greatly enjoyed a fishing trip at the Tim Pond Camps:http://timpond.com

My uncle and his grandson had fun at King Barlett camps:

Neither of them completely fits your criteria, but they%26#39;re a good jumping off point. The hardest goal to meet is your desire be on a river, staying at different cabins along the way on a weekend trip. Others may know of something along that line.

You might try Weatherby%26#39;s in Grand Lake Stream. The river part is hard, but they are very accomodating, and I am sure they could set something up for you, including the lobster dinner as they are an American plan set of sporting camps. The owner is a registered guide. I have stayed there several times and have always been satisfied, and, of course, you can fish the world famous Grand Lake Stream. This is fly fishing only, but if you are not into that, then they can arrange for you to take a trip fishing on the lake.

Thanks for the info. I think we%26#39;ve given up on the over night river part of the trip in favor of a home base where we can then do day trips.

We%26#39;ve come across this group

Any experience with them or this part of maine? Thanks again

Some of the rafting outfitters in the state are well suited for the kind of trip you mention. Two that jump to mind are Northern Outdoors and New England Outdoor Center. You can find either of them online.

If you want something more remote, the Maine Sporting Camps Association is a good place to look. Most sporting camps work with registered Maine Guides and offer home-cooked meals.

Log cabins on a lake, boats for rent, family style breakfast/lunch/dinnner. Cabins have wood stove, hot/cold water shower and head. You WILL SEE wildlife up here. (its logging country). You may call the phone listed on the website for more info.

Good starting point loaded with info...

Please note, if you can%26#39;t live without your cell phone or Blackberry, this area IS NOT for you!

It sounds like the Grand Lake Stream area may be what you are looking for. I have alot of fond memories there of camping and canoeing. Its very quiet and scenic. There are a few lodges and such that would be a match for you. I stayted at Colonial Sportsmans Lodge, not sure if its still open, the guy also recommended guides as well.

BCP, thanks for posting the question on this. We%26#39;ve been considering a canoe trip like this and you hit our preferences nearly in the bullseye. Please check back in with what you decide to do. I%26#39;m interested to hear your final decision and a trip report after.
